I’ll cut to the chase and offer you two scenarios to illustrate why I think this is the one coverage you always select when renting a vehicle.
Does not choose Loss Damage Waiver aka Loss of Use coverage for his rental car. He was involved in a minor accident resulting in damage to the rental car. Fortunately for him his personal insurance policy extends coverage to him and responds to the claim. Three weeks later he receives a bill in the mail from the rental car company highlighting each day they couldn’t rent out the car because it was in the shop being repaired and/or waiting on replacement parts. His two-day rental turned out to be a 14-day rental.
Purchases the Loss Damage Waiver for her rental car. She was involved in a minor accident resulting in damage to the rental car. Fortunately for her, her personal insurance policy extends coverage and responds to the claim. Three weeks later she gets nothing in the mail because with the Loss Damage Waiver – she walks away.
In summary, if your rental car is stolen, damaged or vandalized, you are responsible. This loss of use occurs because the rental car company cannot make money off their vehicle while it’s out of commission.
So, what should you do? That’s entirely up to you. However, what I choose to pay for it as, like Driver B, I want to walk away.
According to Hertz (and we agree) you can’t just destroy your rental for fun.
